The Dyslexia Series

Examining Dyslexia: Remediation that Works!
According to the International Dyslexia Association, it is estimated that 1 in 10 people suffer from dyslexia. Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder with neurological origins characterized by difficulties such as word recognition, spelling and decoding, resulting in poor reading comprehension. The good news is that dyslexia is one of the most researched and understood disabilities. Examining: Dyslexia: Remediation that Works! is a 3 credit hour, self-paced course that teaches participants how to develop and implement research-based strategies and comprehensive remediation plans to help students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties succeed. Participants will learn how and why these strategies are successful in relation to dyslexic neurobiology and how to accurately assess students’ current phonological levels in order to effectively individualize strategies and supports. Emphasis on understanding English language word construction, how sounds are construed, and how it all relates to reading will be explored. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to apply and practice the strategies and assessments learned in a supportive and informed environment.

Examining: Overcoming Dyslexia
This is a 3 credit hour, self-paced course based on the book Overcoming Dyslexia: A  New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level by Yale neuroscientist Sally Shaywitz. Dyslexia is a neurologically based reading difficulty that can, if not identified and treated, result in school failures and drop out. Dyslexia is a specific disability in the area of reading and is often characterized by significant decoding and comprehension issues as related to printed material. With early identification, treatment, and support, people with dyslexia can succeed. This class will offer an overview of dyslexia; giving the reader a strong understanding of the history of the disability and how it affects reading, and is identified and remediated.  An overview of programs that the author cites as effective and scientifically based will be presented.
