Examining: How to Survive & Thrive in the Classroom (3cr hrs) Starts December 9th...Ends February 5th How to Survive & Thrive in the Classroom is a 3 credit hour course that builds on the 7 principles employed by master teachers presented by Robyn R. Jackson in her book Never Work Harder than Your Students, 2nd ed. The course begins by teaching participants how to assess students’ cultural and intellectual currency to determine where they are, what they value and where they are going academically. Next, participants will investigate how to use supports and feedback to get students where they need to be. The culminating principle, never work harder than your students, will be discovered as teachers move through the guiding tenets for making students successful. EXPRESS: Beyond the Gradebook: Teachers Do A Lot More Than Teach! (3cr hrs) Starts February 24th...Ends April 9th Every one of us has dealt with the effects of abuse. We may have grown up with it, or seen it in the family of a friend. We see it in some of our students and we see it played over and over again on the nightly news. Abuse is insidious and can hide behind the face of charm and innocence. We all carry the scars and those scars don’t totally heal. Why do some people grow up to perpetuate abuse and others become paragons of love? Jacob Chastain, the author of Teach Me, Teacher, shares his experiences growing up in an abusive home. He overcame the horror and “saw the light.” Why? What did he do and can we do that for ourselves and our students? Jacob Chastain celebrates good decision making (his father did not have this ability), passion for teaching and being positive. He says he can’t imagine not loving what he does! “It’s the children the world almost breaks who grow up to save it.” —Frank Warren

Depression impacts home life, social life, school life and every aspect of a child’s being. Sleep is impaired, grades drop and hopelessness and helplessness can lead to despair. This class will explore the symptoms of childhood depression, the “red flags” teachers and parents should be aware of and the struggles children with depression endure. Information will be presented on how educators need to react to students who display depressive symptoms and how to build a safe and supportive network. Videos highlighting teens who deal with depression from the “inside” will provide the learner with information on how debilitating this condition can be.
