Dr. Sally Shaywtiz has finally come out with her second edition of Overcoming Dyslexia. A groundbreaking, blockbuster of a book that shattered myths and provided parents and professionals with scientific information on dyslexia that includes explaining the nature of  dyslexia and reading, operationalizing and diagnosing dyslexia, giving assistance to the child in reading and turning poor readers into excellent readers, choosing a school that would meet the needs of a dyslexic child and dealing with dyslexia successfully after high school and beyond.
The research is comprehensive. Dyslexia can be treated and Shaywitz makes it clear what methods should be used. Clear identification and a good understanding of what is happening when the dyslexic child reads are paramount in designing a treatment plan.
Shaywitz discusses ways to evaluate school programs and schools designed for dyslexics. How to pick a college, how to be successful in college or a post secondary program are presented
She lays out what should and should not occur during the life of a dyslexic child. Other topics include adult dyslexia, dyslexia and ADHD and dyslexia and anxiety. Ways to remediate dyslexia in adults is also introduced.

This class is built upon the text Overcoming Dyslexia 2nd Ed. By Sally Shaywitz, M.D. and Jonathon Shaywitz, M. D. It is based on scientific evidence and years of research delving into what makes the dyslexic mind “tick” and how to remediate those “ticks” so reading achievement is accomplished. Shaywitz introduces the reader to children and adults who are dyslexic and their families. She provides us with a clear look at the agony this condition can cause and how it can be identified early and treated.
Sally Shaywitz is co-director of the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity. She has written more than 350 scientific articles and book chapters and created the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreen (trademark). Dr. Shaywitz is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and is consistently listed as one of the best doctors in America.
Sally Shaywitz and Bennett Shaywitz were awarded, together, the The Library Science Center 2019 Genius Award for their work on dyslexia.

What is going on in Iowa with Dyslexia?
June 2020 a was bill signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds addressing the Task Force recommendations SF 2356 in regards to the education of dyslexic children.
We have put together a brief account of what will be happening in the next few years to help children who are dyslexic in the state of Iowa.
  • By September 2021, Area Education Agencies should collaborate with the Iowa Department of Education and the Dyslexia Board to develop and implement an action plan for the Dyslexia Professional Learning Framework developed by the Dyslexia Task Force for educators to support students with characteristics of dyslexia. (Approved unanimously by the Task Force.) Recommendations to Pre-service Education Programs
  • By September 2021, pre-service education programs should have an action plan to provide differentiated training on the knowledge, skills, and dispositions aligned to the Dyslexia Professional Learning Framework developed by the Dyslexia Task Force. This differentiated training must include completion of the Iowa Reading Research Center Dyslexia Overview module. (Approved unanimously by the Task Force.)
  • Pre-service education programs may apply to offer training toward the new endorsement at the conclusion of the endorsement pilot project. (Approved unanimously by the Task Force.) Recommendations to School Districts
  • By July 2021, school boards should assure all licensed educators have completed the Iowa Reading Research Center Dyslexia Overview module; any new educators in subsequent years should be required to have completed this module by the end of their first year of service. (Approved unanimously by the Task Force.)
  • By school year 2022-23, districts should engage in regular, rigorous self-assessments of the quality of explicit, systematic instruction they offer, guided by a tool to be developed by the Iowa Department of Education in collaboration with the new Dyslexia Board. Self-assessments should take place at least once every three years. (Approved with a vote of twelve in favor and one opposed.)
  • By August 2025, districts should ensure educators, paraprofessionals, administrators, and school board members take part in the professional learning opportunities as guided by the Dyslexia Professional Learning Framework action plan. (Approved unanimously by the Task Force.)

February is Black History Month!

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

Exploring: Childhood Depression

Childhood depression has grown significantly in recent years. Depression impacts home life, social life, school life and every aspect of a child’s being. Sleep is impaired, grades drop and hopelessness and helplessness can lead to despair. This class will explore the symptoms of childhood depression, the “red flags” teachers and parents should be aware of and the struggles children with depression endure. Information will be presented on how educators need to react to students who display depressive symptoms and how to build a safe and supportive network. Videos highlighting teens who deal with depression from the “inside” will provide the learner with information on how debilitating this condition can be. Treatment options will be discussed and avenues of hope will be provided.

Featured class for February:
Project Based Teaching
How do we prepare students for the 21st century work place? How do we know what that will look like in our ever changing world? Students today may end up in professions that we haven’t even heard of yet! One method that leads the pack and allows us to tie together all aspects of 21st century learning and skills is project based teaching (PBT). We need to build a culture that promotes and respects PBT.

Project Based Teaching: Real Steps to Achievement will give participants time to explore dozens of project examples, plans and resources in multiple subject areas and grade levels. Guidance and insights on planning and organizing, meeting standards, developing activities, and assessing and monitoring projects are provided as we break down the process within a framework to ensure projects promote active questioning, curiosity, collaboration, coordination and plenty of trial and error opportunities for students to experience on their way to success.

By the end of the course, participants will know how to create engaging, quality projects and establish project based learning environments that will develop the skills their students need for successful futures.

EXAMINING: Project Based Teaching
(3cr hrs) Starts February 24th...Ends April 30th

What Does It Mean To Be Trauma-Informed?
Click here for a 4-Part Video Explainer-
Studies show that children who experience traumatic stress are more likely to struggle in the classroom. But as our understanding of how students are affected by trauma expands, so, too, does our understanding of how to build a school environment to help them.
