Factors Contributing to Poor Mental Health Among Children During the Pandemic
Social distancing and prolonged periods at home as a result of the pandemic have negatively impacted the mental health of children. Many children feel isolated and lonely which can feed into a cycle of sadness, anxiety and depression.
Research indicates that mental health issues associated with anxiety and depression can set the tone for mental health problems later in life.
Because children have been in isolation and quarantine due to the pandemic, they may experience an increase in separation anxiety from parents or caregivers. Many of those same caregivers are under tremendous stress themselves as they try to balance work, childcare, household responsibilities and money problems.

Research finds that "49% of households with children reported a loss of employment income and 61% reported difficulty paying for usual household expenses in late March 2021."
Parents who experience difficult mental health issues many compound mental health issues in their children. Many children from low income households have little to no access to mental health care.
The incidents of child abuse has increased because of the pandemic it is believed because of parental stress. Child abuse is linked to

adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) linked to possible mental illness and substance misuse later in life.

EXPLORING: Dying to Eat: When Food is Your Enemy
(3cr hrs) Starts April 13th...Ends June 10th

Eating disorders present a debilitating condition that has increased in all strata of society and age groups dramatically over the years. Eating disorders can impact infants, children, teens and adults. They can reach both men and women; although many eating disorders have been found to be experienced by more women than men.  Mortality rates for individuals with an eating disorder are much higher than those in the general population and medical costs are significantly increased. Eating disorders impact quality of life and place burdens on families, education, employment and society.

This class will explore the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, the red flags teachers and parents should be aware of, and the struggles people with eating disorders endure. Information will be presented on how educators need to react to students who display symptoms of eating disorders and how to build a safe and supportive network. Each individual eating disorder type will be explored highlighting symptoms, treatment and what educators can do to help the child/teen with an eating disorder. Videos of professionals explaining these corrosive disorders will be presented along with videos of people who have experienced, or are experiencing the condition.

Strategies, approaches, techniques and interventions will be discussed on how to remediate and support the child/teen who suffers from an eating disorder within the classroom and home setting.

Madeline Will reports on an EdWeek Research Center survey that indicates that teacher morale has fallen considerably over the span of the pandemic.
"In a November survey of a nationally representative sample of 817 teachers, nearly three-quarters of teachers say their morale is lower than it was before the pandemic, and 85 percent say overall teacher morale at their school is lower now. Back in March, just 63 percent of teachers said morale was lower.
Now, 42 percent of teachers say the coronavirus pandemic has made them feel less motivated at work."
What can be done to help? School leaders have provided the following list of ideas to bring morale in teachers up:

-Give teachers more planning time. Many teachers say that’s the No. 1 thing keeping them afloat during this unpredictable school year.
-Offer opportunities for socialization. Teachers are isolated from their peers this year, so offer chances for them to connect outside of a work setting, like a virtual social hour or an activity like virtual yoga.
-Provide mental-health support via a hotline or in-school counseling sessions. Teachers are under immense pressures this year, given the changes to their jobs and the stresses of living through a pandemic, and might benefit from talking to a professional.
