It Takes a Village: Building School, Family & Community Partnerships is a 3 credit hour, Self-Study/Instructor Guided class that looks at the ability of school, family & community partnerships to improve students’ academic achievement, build necessary 21st Century Skills, and better prepare them for becoming active, productive members of our communities as adults. The course gives participants the foundational theory and research to support these claims, a framework for implementing successful partnerships, and opportunities to develop and practice strategies that forge beneficial relationships.
Organization
This is a Self-Study/Instructor Guided course (SS/IG). Participants work independently on the course content with coaching and feedback from the instructor. The course is organized into 5 units. The length of time each unit should take to complete varies from approximately 10 to 30 hrs. Lessons will be taught using a combination of readings, videos, external resources, examples, activities, assignments, and enrichment materials.The instructor will offer feedback and coaching on all activities and assignments.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 
1. Explain the practical benefits of and the theory behind school-family-community partnerships 
2. Demonstrate a working understanding of the Framework of 6 Types of Involvement 
3. Implement strategies that support the 6 Types of Involvement

Unit 1: Theory & Research
Unit 2: Proposed National Standards, A Framework for Involvement, & Action Teams 
Unit 3: Parenting & Communicating
Unit 4: Volunteering & Learning at Home
Unit 5: Decision Making & Collaborating with the Community


Grading
Grading is the same whether the course is taken for graduate credit or for license renewal. Students are required to participate in all discussion forums and to complete all assignments and/or activities. A=90%-100%; B=80%-89%-Because this is a graduate level course, scores must be 80% or better to receive credit.

Required Text: School, Family, and Community Partnerships (2011) by Joyce L. Epstein can be purchased through local bookstores or ordered online.
