The number of children who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has grown in recent years. Much of this growth has occurred because of appropriate identification. According to the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry “Surveys show 2.4% (388,000) of children aged 2 to 5 years old, and 9.6% (2.4 million) of children aged 6 to 11 years old have been diagnosed with ADHD. The median age of diagnosis for severe ADHD is 4 years old.”
This class will explore what ADHD is and isn’t. It will also explore what signs and symptoms to look for and how to distinguish ADHD from Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT). SCT will be examined and its role in the pattern of pathology. Videos highlighting people who deal with ADHD from the “inside” will provide the learner with information on how debilitating this condition can be. The work of Dr. Russell Barkley will be presented. Dr. Barkley is one of the leading experts on ADHD. The participants will read articles and watch videos by Dr. Barkley as he explores exactly what to watch for and how to deal with ADHD. Executive functioning skills will be examined, what they are and how they are impacted by ADHD.
Strategies, approaches, techniques and interventions will be discussed on how to remediate and support students with ADHD within the classroom setting and the home setting.
