This was one of the best courses I have taken in a long time. This will be the last three credits of my teaching career. This course and the text that was chosen for the course was dynamic. The activities and reflections of this course mirrored with what was being discussed by the author in the text. I will totally recommend this course to my fellow middle school teachers. You get to take away so much that can be used in your classroom immediately... Again, a dynamic course for any content taught, and any teaching experience.

I am so thankful that I took this course this summer. I am so appreciative when I can learn something and apply it to my classroom. The most important thing that I’ve learned is early screening and diagnosis of dyslexia. In the past, I’ve given students “the give them time” approach to learning. Honestly, in the students that I’ve done this for, almost none of them got caught up in the time I was giving them. They just fell further behind. I’m done with this happening. I need to be their advocate!  Early intensive interventions are so important for a child with dyslexia. I started to do some orthographic mapping last year. I’m excited to expand this into small phonics as well as reading small groups. I’ve also been on the hunt for decodables that are well written. I plan to write a grant this fall for decodables for my classroom.

I have also learned that the ways you teach a child with dyslexia how to read are really the best ways to teach any child how to read. It’s systematic and direct. . I am looking forward to a great year of teaching reading to six and seven year olds!

I really enjoyed the course.  It compliments what we have been doing in our PD and has given me more things to think about and bring up with our Building Leadership Team for this upcoming year's PD.  The class helped me think more deeply about how to actually implement some things which is just what I was looking for.  I already felt comfortable with the philosophical concept and this was reaffirmed in several things we covered.  I'm looking forward to talking with our instructional coach and principal about experimenting with how I record and adjust things in Powerschool to better fit what takes place in my classroom rather than the traditional 100 point scale that Powerschool uses. I see this change in recording as a progression that will continue tp improve and be adjusted over time, but I feel like I have a starting point! Thanks for the learning opportunity and for several resources that will come in handy with our staff.

This was a great course! I enjoyed the reflections as I was able to think more in depth about the district that I am teaching in as well as myself as a teacher. I was able to do a lot of self reflecting which I think is an important part of teaching. The assignments were interesting and insightful and got me thinking about how I can improve my teaching and work toward master teaching. The book was also very interesting and provided great information as well. I cannot wait to share pieces of this class and the book with my colleagues.

I really enjoyed taking this class and having discussions with others and seeing their points of view! We all have such different backgrounds and views and takes on the information that was presented. I found the book fairly easy to follow along in and read. Growing up with my family doing foster care and seeing so many trauma based kiddos, this class helped me realize some of the things from the brain development view of it – it kind of made it all make sense more. This is something that I feel like all teachers should have to have intense training on as so many children have traumas of different kinds – and each child is affected by different experiences differently. I definitely feel like understanding brain development helps aid in behavioral interventions and different strategies to use in the classroom. This is a class that I will be recommending to others to take!!

I really like this course! I really found the whole book to be extremely helpful! I am sharing with my teacher bestie once this class is over. It was nice to reflect on every chapter because it got us to begin putting this process into work. I think I will be able to apply this into my own teaching practices. I really liked how the final assignment we had to create an action plan because now I have something to work for to become a better teacher. I understand that this work won't be done overnight but I do like how we have some material to start with.

I teach in the southeast Iowa river town that I grew up in. I teach students with significant cognitive disabilities.
There is a lot of information that can be taken back to school and shared with my colleagues.  I know that it is in the best interest of the students to make sure that in our discussions we are focused on strengths and assets and to reroute the conversation if it diverts toward the negative.  For the past couple years I have felt that negativity was becoming a major focus of my mindset.  This course has helped open my mindset, I even found myself practicing positivity and identifying strengths with my husband and children this summer.  I use routines a lot in my classroom but as the school year gets underway I find my classroom getting lax with the routines.  The research and information in this course reminded me that it needs to be consistent throughout the school year for the success of the students.  One thing that I know that I need to work on is learning more about the community resources and use them to help with the success of the students.  I am excited about this school year because I feel more prepared to create partnerships with my students' families.
Thank you for teaching this course.

Wow, where do I even begin?  I cannot thank you enough for everything I learned in this class.  I signed up for this class not really knowing what I was signing up for, just looking for something to renew my license with.  When I saw the name of this class, it hit home to me and sounded very intriguing.  Little did I know, what I would be going through and how perfect the class was to help me get through the trials and persevere.  I am so thankful you were understanding and allotted me the extra time so I did not have to rush through and could absorb it more.  There should be more classes like this one, this class spoke about real life and how to handle real life and how to incorporate real life things into the classroom.  I had never heard of Genius Hour, or the Power of Yet and now I cannot wait to have a classroom again so I can begin to utilize the tools I have gained in the class.  I have already began using different techniques in my own home and with my kiddos.  My wife has begun a relaxation station at her job as she is a director of admitting at the hospital and they are on the front line dealing with the pandemic and the horrible stress of these past two years, her staff love the relaxation station idea, and she has reported how that has helped her.  Thank you so much for the blessing of this class, for your understanding patience, it is greatly appreciated.
