Childhood depression has grown significantly in recent years. Depression impacts home life, social life, school life and every aspect of a child’s being. Sleep is impaired, grades drop and hopelessness and helplessness can lead to despair. This class will explore the signs and symptoms of childhood depression, the “red flags” teachers and parents should be aware of, and the struggles children with depression endure. Information will be presented on how educators need to react to students who display depressive symptoms and how to build a safe and supportive network. Videos highlighting teens who deal with depression from the “inside” will provide the learner with information on how debilitating this condition can be.
Strategies, approaches, techniques and interventions will be discussed on how to remediate and support depressed children within the classroom setting and the home setting. Special note will be given to dealing with children who have experienced a traumatic event such as the pandemic.
