Examining: How the Special Needs Brain Learns is a 3 credit hour, self-paced course based on the book How the Special Needs Brain Learns, 3rd edition by David A. Sousa. Participants will investigate the latest research into what’s going on inside the brains of students with attention disorders, speech/language disabilities, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, emotional-behavioral disorders and autism spectrum disorders. Then, building on this understanding, participant will learn specific strategies that address the functions of the special needs brain in order to help students be more successful.
*This course may be taken for either EDMA graduate credit or IA license renewal credit.
Organization
The course is organized into 5 Units. The length of time each unit should take to complete varies from approximately 20 to 25 hrs. Lessons will be taught using a combination of readings, videos, external resources, examples, discussion forums, discussion activities, assignments, and enrichment materials. The discussion forums, assignments and reflections will allow participants to utilize and put into practice the theory that they have learned. Students will receive coaching and feedback on their discussions, assignments and reflections from the instructors as these activities are completed.
